BENEATH THE LEAVES

Simone Grünewald

Over the last few years, Simone Grünewald has been exploring a world inhabited by small redheaded people, living hidden in the woods. It started with a simple idea, when she thought: what could those small people do with all the stuff the Big People discard? Since then, she has been following this question, and drawing the daily life of these small people. Of all ages and genders, those Small People make up a colorful community that is close to nature. They live in symbiosis with a crafty witch, who sells what they create on fairs and is a bridge between their world and the humans.

Simone Grünewald’s alter ego, the crafty witch, is inviting you to jump into their world in Beneath the Leaves – Field Notes from the Undergrowth, an art book where she gathered everything she knows about these small folks. All the illustrations and sketches she has created about them are presented as a field guide, a scrapbook for you to leaf through. Discover their lifestyle, their crafts and their adventures…
