The project Magnum Generation(s)

At the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War, as the shadow of fascism was spreading around the world, Robert Capa, Gerda Taro, Henri Cartier-Bresson, George Rodger et David Seymourwent into the field to witness events that would shake world history, sharing what they saw with those who could not be there, thereby defining the raison d’être of the photo reporter.

In support of their undertaking, and aspiring to greater things, they would set up the famous Magnum Photos cooperative. They were courageous and devoted to each other in the heart of conflicts, where they would go to find and reveal the truth.

The English version of Magnum Generation(s) will soon be launched on Kickstarter.

A graphic novel… and more!

Rediscover iconic images and the history of Magnum Photos

Magnum Photos is a photographic cooperative founded in New York in 1947 and some of the world’s greatest photographers have taken the most iconic images in the history of photojournalism within its esteemed periphery.

Published in close collaboration with Magnum Photos, Magnum Generation(s) includes a portfolio of 73 photos: one for each of the agency’s photographers. Since 1936, when Robert Capa’s lens eternally captured the dignity of a dying Spanish Republican mortally wounded by a bullet, until 2022, when Emin Özmen photographed Turkish children playing on the roof of an almost submerged mosque, there has been a secret complicity binding the common humanity of all countries and generations as they play, rebel, embrace, love and laugh. In short, from the immediate proximity of where they stand, they make and reveal the course of history. l’histoire.

The book concludes with a 14-page dossier in which Clara Bouveresse offers an ardent but uncompromising history of the agency, from its inception to the present day. Weare privy to the agency’s constant attempts to overcome its limitations and major contradictions, the discussions and also the conflicts that propel it ever forward, and the evolution of its principles and organization.

Interview with scriptwriter Jean-David Morvan

Jean David Morvan

How did the Magnum Generation(s) project come about?

It took me much longer to complete than expected, not least because of the sheer volume of sources I had to cross-reference. In addition to the documentation available in France, I needed to refer to American, English, Spanish, Italian and German books…
